How to Grow Black Runtz train (2026 Grow Diary)

Black Runtz is a bold, flavorful hybrid with a fruity candy profile and a sharp citrus kick from its Lemon Tree notes. Its terpene mix brings berries, sweet spice, and a smooth finish that becomes stronger as buds thicken. With genetics from Z, Gelato, and Runtz, this strain grows compact, frosty, and extremely aromatic. If you want to grow Black Runtz seeds, expect a dense, resin-rich plant that thrives in controlled environments and produces energetic, active, and sociable effects.

Why Grow Black Runtz

Black Runtz is ideal for growers who want an easy height profile, fast flowering, and extremely high resin production. Its compact size makes it perfect for small tents, while its genetics ensure premium flavor and aroma. The strain is stable, forgiving, and handles training well. If you enjoy fruity, spicy, and sweet terpene profiles combined with high potency and energetic effects, Black Runtz is one of the best choices.

Setup and Growing Conditions

Indoor Growing

Use a 2×4, 3×3, or 4×4 tent and a 300 to 480 W LED. Black Runtz stays compact, which makes canopy control easy.
Key indoor notes:

  • PPFD 450 to 600 in veg, 900 to 1100 in flower
  • Use 5 to 7 gallon pots for strong root development
  • Strong airflow to protect dense buds from moisture
  • Light defoliation helps increase light penetration
  • Keep nutrients moderate to avoid terpene dulling

Outdoor Growing

Black Runtz performs well in warm climates with strong sunlight.
Key outdoor notes:

  • Plant in full sun for highest THC potential
  • Support branches in late flower
  • Use airy, fertile soil
  • Watch for humidity spikes near harvest
  • Ideal for growers who need compact outdoor plants

Week 1 to 2: Germination and Seedling

Z and Gelato genetics make seedlings strong and predictable.
What to do:

  • Keep medium lightly moist
  • Use mild airflow
  • Avoid intense light during the first 5 days
  • Keep temps above 72 F
Pro Tip: Black Runtz seedlings stay compact, making early training easier later.

Week 3: Early Vegetative

Growth becomes more structured with balanced internode spacing.
What to do:

  • Increase light to 50–60 percent
  • Feed lightly at 0.4 to 0.6 EC
  • Maintain airflow around lower branches
  • Avoid overwatering to prevent slowdowns
Common mistake: overfeeding nitrogen in week 3.

Week 4: Veg Expansion and Early Training

This is the best week to shape Black Runtz.
What to do:

  • Top above the fourth or fifth node
  • Use LST to flatten the canopy
  • Increase nutrients to 0.8–1.2 EC
  • Remove a few lower leaves
Pro Tip: A flat canopy boosts final yield and creates more top-quality buds.

Week 5 to 6: Pre-Flower and Stretch

Black Runtz stretches moderately with stable structure.
What to do:

  • Switch to 12/12
  • Add stakes or trellis for bud support
  • Lower humidity to 50 percent
  • Increase EC to 1.3 to 1.4
  • Increase light intensity gradually
Tip: This strain can add 10 to 14 inches of height during stretch.

Week 7 to 9: Flowering and Bud Formation

Aromas become fruity, spicy, and citrus bright.
What to do:

  • Maintain temps 68–78 F
  • Keep RH at 45–50 percent
  • Add potassium booster in week 8
  • Defoliate lightly for airflow
  • Keep PPFD around 900–1100
Pro Tip: This strain produces thick resin coatings, so airflow is essential.

Week 10: Ripening and Resin Push

Buds frost over heavily and aroma intensifies.
What to do:

  • Reduce temps slightly to boost terpene retention
  • Reduce nitrogen to zero
  • Lower humidity to 40–45 percent
  • Check trichomes for ideal harvest point
Optional: cool nights can bring out darker tones.

Week 11: Final Ripening and Harvest Prep

Time to finalize density and aroma.
What to do:

  • Maintain environment steady
  • Avoid stressing the plant
  • Prepare your drying area
Result: dense, sweet, fruity buds with a spicy edge and energetic effects.

Gary Payton

Michael ClintMarch 27, 2024

I’ve been growing weed for 30+ years, and to be honest, it’s quite difficult to surprise me. After a few decades of facing different strains, changing growing conditions, and solving whatever problem you could possibly think of, by then, I believe I’ve seen it all in cannabis growing.

Gary Payton defied every single one of my expectations.
The plant thrived, growing to an impressive 6 feet in what seemed like a blink of an eye. It quickly filled out with buds and displayed better smell each day, showing solid proof of superior genetics. The buds were tight, aromatic, and a source of immense pride, surpassing the outcome of many of my previous endeavors.

Hypno Seeds with their Gary Payton strain has won my complete admiration and loyalty. Outstanding genetics in this plant have truly turned what I always thought of to be an experiment with negligible expectations into one of the most satisfying grows of my long career.

Looking forward, my excitement for the next growing season is unparalleled. I can’t wait to see how much I can take these strains, especially with the attention that Gary Payton really does deserve right from the start.

Blackberry Kush

WhildGreeneryMarch 28, 2024

Starting my latest grow, I decided to try out some Blackberry Kush from Hypno… I planted her on a whim alongside my other favorites. Hypno Seeds said it had to be a powerful plant with rich, fruity scents… Seeing is believing. She developed purplish hues and dense resin coated buds and quickly took center stage in my garden and produced much more than expected. The buds are tightly packed, literally bursting with the heady aroma. The yield? Very impressive for her conditions…
