Germination: Starting Your Godfather OG Grow

  • Use the paper towel method: place seeds between two damp (not soaking) paper towels, sandwich between plates.
  • Keep in a warm (~70-75°F) and dark spot until a tap-root appears (~½ inch).
  • Plant root-tip down about ½ inch into your starter medium.
  • Avoid sealed plastic bags which can trap moisture and encourage rot.

Week 1: Seedling Stage

What to Expect:

  • 1-2″ tall, cotyledons + first true leaves emerging.
  • Bright green colour, steady growth.

Environment Targets:

  • Light: 18-24h, low intensity
  • Temp: 72-77°F
  • Humidity: 65-70%
  • Water: Light mist or minimal watering ring
  • Nutrients: None yet (or light Cal-Mag if using inert medium)

Tip: Ensure gentle air movement to strengthen stems and prevent mold.

Week 2: Early Veg + Optional LST

What to Expect:

  • Height ~3-5″, more fan leaves, stronger stems, early branching.
  • Aroma may start subtly.

Environment Targets:

  • Light: 18h (~300 PPFD)
  • Temp: 73-78°F
  • Humidity: 60-65%
  • Nutrients: Veg feed at ~¼ strength

Optional: Light LST to open up the canopy early, especially helpful for a dense indica-dominant strain.

Week 3: Veg Expansion

What to Expect:

  • Height ~8-12″, internodes begin lengthening, side branches grow.
  • Foliage rich green, compact form.

Environment Targets:

  • Light: 18h (~400-500 PPFD)
  • Temp: 73-78°F
  • Humidity: 55-60%
  • Nutrients: Veg feed at ~½ strength

Note: This strain responds well to topping or training early to maintain manageable height.

Week 4: Pre-Flower & Final Training

What to Expect:

  • Height ~14-18″, bushy form, multiple tops prepare for stretch.
  • Aroma deepens — earthy pine and spice.

Environment Targets:

  • Light: 18/6 (~500-600 PPFD)
  • Temp: 72-78°F
  • Humidity: 50-55%
  • Nutrients: Full veg feed

Tip: Final LST/topping now; remove lower growth to increase airflow before flipping.

Week 5: Flower Begins

What to Expect:

  • Height ~18-25″ (stretch begins)
  • Pistils appear at nodes, stronger aroma of pine/wood.
  • Bud sites visible.

Environment Targets:

  • Light: Switch to 12/12 (~600 PPFD)
  • Temp: 72-78°F
  • Humidity: ~45-50%
  • Nutrients: Begin bloom formula (higher P & K, lower N)

Week 6: Bud Sites & Trichome Development

What to Expect:

  • Height ~25-30″, bud sites at many nodes, early resin.
  • Aroma: Fresh wood, spice, pine dominate.

Environment Targets:

  • Light: 12/12 (~700 PPFD)
  • Temp: 70-77°F
  • Humidity: ~45%
  • Nutrients: Bloom feed + Cal-Mag

Week 7–8: Bud Fattening & Aroma Surge

What to Expect:

  • Height ~30-40″, dense buds, heavy resin coverage
  • Trichomes visible, aroma thick: pine/wood/spice
  • Buds start stacking.

Environment Targets:

  • Light: 12/12 (~700-800 PPFD)
  • Temp: 68-75°F
  • Humidity: 40-45%
  • Nutrients: Maintain bloom; optional terpene booster

Tip: Support heavy branches; dense indica colas may need staking.

What to Expect:

  • Buds fully matured, very sticky; pistils ~70-90% coloured; trichomes mostly cloudy, some amber.
  • Smell: deep wood, spice, pine; rich finish.

  • Drying: ~60°F, ~55% RH in darkness for ~10–14 days
  • Curing: Place in airtight glass jars, burp daily for first week, then weekly
  • Final buds: Earthy-pine aroma, spicy finish, euphoric + relaxed effect

Gary Payton

Michael ClintMarch 27, 2024

I’ve been growing weed for 30+ years, and to be honest, it’s quite difficult to surprise me. After a few decades of facing different strains, changing growing conditions, and solving whatever problem you could possibly think of, by then, I believe I’ve seen it all in cannabis growing.

Gary Payton defied every single one of my expectations.
The plant thrived, growing to an impressive 6 feet in what seemed like a blink of an eye. It quickly filled out with buds and displayed better smell each day, showing solid proof of superior genetics. The buds were tight, aromatic, and a source of immense pride, surpassing the outcome of many of my previous endeavors.

Hypno Seeds with their Gary Payton strain has won my complete admiration and loyalty. Outstanding genetics in this plant have truly turned what I always thought of to be an experiment with negligible expectations into one of the most satisfying grows of my long career.

Looking forward, my excitement for the next growing season is unparalleled. I can’t wait to see how much I can take these strains, especially with the attention that Gary Payton really does deserve right from the start.

Starting my latest grow, I decided to try out some Blackberry Kush from Hypno… I planted her on a whim alongside my other favorites. Hypno Seeds said it had to be a powerful plant with rich, fruity scents… Seeing is believing. She developed purplish hues and dense resin coated buds and quickly took center stage in my garden and produced much more than expected. The buds are tightly packed, literally bursting with the heady aroma. The yield? Very impressive for her conditions…
