Germination: Starting Your Grape Ape Grow

Start your seeds using the paper-towel method. Keep them between two damp (not soaked) towels, placed on a plate and covered by another to maintain warmth and darkness. Within 24–72 hours, you’ll see a white taproot emerge. Once it reaches about half an inch, carefully transplant it root-tip down into soil, about ½ inch deep. Avoid sealing the towels in plastic or exposing them to direct light.

Week 1–2: Seedling & Early Veg

Your Grape Ape seedlings will sprout bright green leaves and establish roots quickly. Maintain warm temperatures around 73–77°F and humidity near 70%. Keep light intensity gentle to prevent stretching and water sparingly, focusing around the root zone. By week 2, you’ll notice strong leaf development and early branching—this is when you can introduce light nutrients and gentle airflow to strengthen stems.

Week 3–4: Veg Expansion & Training

By the third week, your plants will be compact and bushy with dark, wide indica leaves. Keep temperatures 73–78°F and reduce humidity to around 60%. You can start light low-stress training to encourage lateral growth and expose more bud sites. Grape Ape stays short, so spreading the canopy helps maximize yield. Finish any pruning or topping by the end of week 4 and prepare for flower transition.

Week 5–6: Flower Initiation

Switch your lighting to a 12/12 schedule and watch the first pistils appear at the nodes. Plants will stretch slightly, reaching about 30–40 inches, but stay manageable. The aroma begins to sweeten—expect hints of grape candy and spice. Keep humidity around 50% and transition to a bloom-focused nutrient mix with higher phosphorus and potassium.

Week 7–8: Bud Development

Your Grape Ape will now pack on weight. Buds grow dense, resin starts covering the sugar leaves, and purple shades may start to appear under cooler nighttime temps. Lower humidity to 45%, keep temps 68–75°F, and ensure strong airflow around colas. This is when trichome production peaks—your buds will be sticky, aromatic, and increasingly fruity each day.

Week 9–10: Ripening & Flush

The home stretch. The buds thicken and take on a rich grape-berry aroma with pine undertones. Begin flushing with plain, pH-balanced water to remove nutrient buildup and improve taste. Aim for 65–70°F and 40% humidity. Once trichomes turn mostly cloudy with 10–15% amber, your Grape Ape is ready to harvest.

Harvest & Curing

Cut your plants and hang them upside down in a dark, ventilated room at 60°F and 55% RH for 10–14 days. Once stems snap, trim the buds and place them in glass jars for curing. Burp daily for the first week, then a few times per week after. Within 3–4 weeks, your buds will be perfectly smooth, sweet, and ready to enjoy.

Gary Payton

Michael ClintMarch 27, 2024

I’ve been growing weed for 30+ years, and to be honest, it’s quite difficult to surprise me. After a few decades of facing different strains, changing growing conditions, and solving whatever problem you could possibly think of, by then, I believe I’ve seen it all in cannabis growing.

Gary Payton defied every single one of my expectations.
The plant thrived, growing to an impressive 6 feet in what seemed like a blink of an eye. It quickly filled out with buds and displayed better smell each day, showing solid proof of superior genetics. The buds were tight, aromatic, and a source of immense pride, surpassing the outcome of many of my previous endeavors.

Hypno Seeds with their Gary Payton strain has won my complete admiration and loyalty. Outstanding genetics in this plant have truly turned what I always thought of to be an experiment with negligible expectations into one of the most satisfying grows of my long career.

Looking forward, my excitement for the next growing season is unparalleled. I can’t wait to see how much I can take these strains, especially with the attention that Gary Payton really does deserve right from the start.

Blackberry Kush

Starting my latest grow, I decided to try out some Blackberry Kush from Hypno… I planted her on a whim alongside my other favorites. Hypno Seeds said it had to be a powerful plant with rich, fruity scents… Seeing is believing. She developed purplish hues and dense resin coated buds and quickly took center stage in my garden and produced much more than expected. The buds are tightly packed, literally bursting with the heady aroma. The yield? Very impressive for her conditions…
