Chocolope is a near-pure sativa legend bred by DNA Genetics. Known as the ultimate “wake-and-bake” strain, it smells exactly like a chocolate-coffee mocha. However, its massive stretch and tendency to foxtail make it a challenging grow for beginners.

To understand Chocolope, you have to understand its mother: Chocolate Thai.
In the 1970s and 80s, “Thai Sticks” were the gold standard of imported cannabis. The Chocolate Thai landrace phenotype was famous for its dark color, soaring cerebral high, and distinct cocoa aroma. Unfortunately, pure Chocolate Thai is notoriously difficult to grow indoors—it takes up to 14 weeks to flower and produces tiny, airy buds.
To modernize this legend, breeders at DNA Genetics crossed OG Chocolate Thai with Cannalope Haze. The Haze genetics significantly reduced the flowering time (down to 9-11 weeks) and bulked up the calyxes, while perfectly preserving the elusive chocolate-coffee terpene profile. The result was Chocolope: a heavy-yielding, commercial-viable sativa that tastes like a morning mocha.
Chocolope is widely considered the ultimate morning strain. The terpene profile is a complex mix of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and sweet tropical melon.
| Terpene | Percentage | Aroma & Flavor | Primary Effect |
| Myrcene | 0.9% – 1.3% | Earthy, musky, roasted coffee | Base relaxation, enhances THC uptake |
| Limonene | 0.6% – 0.9% | Sweet citrus, tropical melon | Mood elevation, stress relief |
| Pinene | 0.4% – 0.6% | Fresh pine, sharp | Mental clarity, focused energy |
| Caryophyllene | 0.3% – 0.5% | Spicy, warm chocolate | Anti-inflammatory, pain relief |
The Wake-and-Bake Effect: Because it is 95% sativa, Chocolope contains virtually zero sedative properties. The combination of Limonene and Pinene delivers a sharp, clear-headed, energetic buzz that combats fatigue without the paranoia sometimes associated with pure sativas.
If you are looking for a daytime productivity strain, you are likely comparing Chocolope to a few other legends. Here is how they stack up.
| Feature | Chocolope | Durban Poison | Green Crack |
| Genetics | Chocolate Thai × Cannalope Haze | South African Landrace | Skunk #1 × Afghani |
| Flavor | Chocolate, Coffee, Melon | Anise, Spicy, Sweet | Tangy Mango, Citrus |
| Flowering Time | 9 – 11 Weeks | 8 – 9 Weeks | 7 – 9 Weeks |
| Effect | Creative, focused, happy | Pure energy, racing thoughts | Racy, highly stimulating |
| Grow Structure | Massive stretch, foxtails | Tall, sturdy branches | Bushy, manageable |
Chocolope stands out for its flavor and lack of anxiety. While Green Crack and Durban Poison can sometimes induce a “racy” or paranoid high in sensitive users, Chocolope provides a much smoother, happier, and more creative energy.
Chocolope is a wild, untamed sativa. If you treat it like an indica, it will outgrow your tent, burn on your lights, and ruin your harvest.
1. The “Short Veg” Strategy
Do not vegetate this plant for 8 weeks. Because Chocolope can triple in height during the flowering stretch, you must keep the vegetative phase short. Flip to a 12/12 light cycle after just 4 to 5 weeks of veg. If the plant is 2 feet tall at flip, it will easily reach 6 feet by week 4 of flower.
2. The “Cool Morning Pulse” Technique
Sativas stretch aggressively when the daytime temperature is significantly hotter than the nighttime temperature. To biologically hack the plant and stop the stretch, use a “cool morning pulse.” Drop your grow room temperature by 5°F to 10°F for the first two hours after the lights turn on. This mimics a chilly morning and signals the plant to stay compact.
3. Nitrogen Reduction
Excess nitrogen fuels vertical stretch. As soon as you flip to 12/12, aggressively reduce your nitrogen input and switch to a phosphorus/potassium-heavy bloom feed.
Chocolope is genetically predisposed to “foxtailing”—a condition where the buds grow in weird, elongated, spire-like stacks instead of round, dense nuggets. While some foxtailing is genetic, severe foxtailing is caused by heat and light stress.
How to stop heat/light foxtailing:
Chocolope requires patience. Here is your roadmap for an 11-week flower cycle.
Keep this phase brief. Top the plant at the 4th node and begin Low Stress Training (LST) immediately. Tie the branches down horizontally to create a wide, flat canopy. Keep EC around 1.2.
Switch to 12/12. For the next 21 to 28 days, Chocolope will explode vertically. Install a SCROG net and weave the branches through daily. Implement the “cool morning pulse” temperature drop. Reduce nitrogen and push EC to 1.6.
The stretch finally stops around week 4 of flower. The buds will begin to swell slowly. This is when you must watch your canopy temperatures closely. If you see white, spindly spires growing out of the top of your buds, raise your lights immediately. Push EC to 2.0.
Sativas take their time ripening. Do not harvest early, or you will miss out on the chocolate terpenes. Begin a 14-day flush around week 9 of flower.
Harvest Timing: Wait until you see at least 10% amber trichomes. Harvesting too early will result in a weak, fleeting high.
Chocolope is a moderate feeder but is highly sensitive to nitrogen in flower.
| Stage | Temp (°F) | Humidity (%) | VPD (kPa) | Target EC | pH Range |
| Seedling | 75 – 78 | 65 – 70 | 0.8 – 1.0 | 0.6 – 0.8 | 6.0 – 6.3 |
| Early Veg | 76 – 80 | 60 – 65 | 0.9 – 1.1 | 1.0 – 1.2 | 6.0 – 6.3 |
| Late Veg | 76 – 80 | 55 – 60 | 1.0 – 1.2 | 1.2 – 1.4 | 6.0 – 6.3 |
| Early Flower | 75 – 78 | 50 – 55 | 1.2 – 1.4 | 1.4 – 1.6 | 6.2 – 6.5 |
| Mid Flower | 72 – 76 | 45 – 50 | 1.3 – 1.5 | 1.8 – 2.0 | 6.2 – 6.5 |
| Late Flower | 68 – 72 | 45 – 50 | 1.4 – 1.6 | Flush (0.0) | 6.2 – 6.5 |
1. Vegging Too Long.
If you veg Chocolope for 8 weeks in a standard 6-foot grow tent, it will grow into your lights, burn the colas, and ruin your harvest. Keep veg time to 4 or 5 weeks maximum.
2. Light Burn (Foxtailing).
Because the plant gets so tall, growers often run out of vertical space and leave the lights too close to the canopy. This triggers severe heat stress and foxtailing. You must use LST and SCROG to keep the canopy flat and away from the lights.
3. Harvesting Too Early.
Sativa growers often get impatient around week 8. If you chop Chocolope at 8 weeks, the buds will be airy, the yield will be low, and the chocolate flavor will not have developed. Wait the full 10 to 11 weeks.
Chocolope is a true connoisseur’s strain. It is one of the few modern hybrids that successfully captured the elusive, old-school flavor of Chocolate Thai without requiring a 14-week flowering cycle.
While it demands respect in the grow room—specifically regarding height management and temperature control—the reward is unlike anything else on the market. There is no better “wake-and-bake” strain in existence. The combination of rich coffee terpenes and a soaring, clear-headed sativa high makes Chocolope the perfect companion for a productive morning.
